holiday break blog

Sara Elliott 1st hour

My first thought when we were told we were watching a movie in class called The Power of One was it was going to be some stupid corny movie that I could sleep through. To my surprise I wanted to stay awake. This movie is powerful and attention grabbing and realistic. Before I entered Global Ed I was oblivious to the world. I thought segregation was only in America but as I learned in the movie it can happen everywhere. Before I didn’t think there could be segregation in Africa because a good percent of the population was black but that shows how oblivious I was. In another Global Ed video, Hotel Rwanda there was segregation between the Hutu’s and the Tutsi’s. Like in this movie there is segregation between the Africans and the Dutch who came to South Africa.
When the movie started I felt so bad for poor P.K. He had it rough from the start, he got peed on, his mom died, and he was separated from his best friend and put into so many different and new atmospheres. But then I realized he manages to make it through all of these situations with his head held high. P.k. was different from most of the other people in South Africa at the time because he didn’t like segregation and he treated everyone the same. In a way that made him a hero, he could bring together different tribes and get them to work together in harmony instead of fighting.

The holiday season is my favorite, but nothing beats Christmas and Christmas break. My family doesn’t really have many traditions anymore since some of the older people in my family who kept them going passed. Some of my favorite traditions passed with them. When I was little on tradition I remember well is my grandma, my moms mom would make these ginger snap cookies. She would only make them over the holidays and no one made them like her. Another one that passed was every year we would go to my Cousin Heidi’s house on Christmas Eve and my Cousin Julie’s house on Christmas day. Some of the holiday traditions we still do aren’t big. Every year we have a party with the family on my mom and dad’s side. On Christmas day we have to wait till everyone in the family is up to open our presents and then the whole family go to eat Christmas breakfast. In my opinion traditions can keep people from moving on with their life but some traditions are good to keep for the same reason.
The best Christmas I can remember was when seven. My sisters and I got up and there was a big box waiting for us and inside was tickets to the Disney parks. There were seven suit cases behind the couch and then my parents, two sister, grandparents, and I was off to Disney world. I don’t know why I thought it was so amazing. Maybe because I like to travel or because it was one of the last Christmases I would spend with my grandpa. For some reason that Christmas was perfect.

I couldn’t wait for the New Year, the new decade. This decade I had good times to remember, bad times to try and forget, and grudges to let go so I could go into the new decade peacefully. For the New Year I vowed to let go of all of my grudges on almost everyone but there will always be a few that couldn’t be let go. Also I decided I was going to try something new every month of the year. I try to erase memories from this year and move on which was the best way to ring in the New Year for me.
2009 was a crazy year for me but was the year I remember the best. My grandpa died and he was the only person who couldn’t annoy me and he could make me happy and make me laugh when I needed it. I took me most of the year to realize he was gone. I loved my grandpa and I always will.
2009 wasn’t all that bad though. I became a lot closer to my middle sister, Becca. Also I got to know my oldest sister, Rachel for the first time in a long time. I got over A LOT this year but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and that is the biggest lesson I learned in 2009. Everything that has happened to me this year was meant to be. It made me a stronger, happier person that I deserved to be all along.

ten things i'm thankful for

Ten things I am thankful for Sara Elliott

Thanksgiving is a good time to remember what you are thankful for. This assignment would be good to get everyone in the spirit for this holiday. So here it goes ten things I’m thankful for :

1. My family- My family is always there for me. I couldn’t live with out them and would never want to know how it would feel to not have a family. Also, they are my biggest support system.

2. Bekah Hagewood and Mary Fredendall- These two girls are my best friends. I love them to death and they are like family to me. They showed me what its like to always have someone there to listen to you and make you smile.

3. Swimming and my Team- over the years the girls you meet on your team become family and your other support system. My coaches are some of my favorite people because they care about everyone on the team and just want the best for you.

4. My House- I am very thankful to have a nice house. These days many Americans are homeless and living on the streets.

5. Friends- I love all of my friends. They are amazing people who all have something about them. These people can make me laugh when I’m mad and make me smile when I’m sad.

6. School- Well I’m not the biggest fan of waking up early to go learn. I should have a better attitude for the school system. They provide us a good education and many possibilities for our bright futures.

7. My grandpa- my grandpa was one of the funniest people I knew. He could make me laugh on a bad day or a good day. He didn’t leave me with one bad memory of him. I would do anything to have him back but I am thankful I got to have him for so long. I will always miss him, but he is better off in where he is now.

8. COSMO the dog- Cosmo is the best dog ever. I think he has a mind of his own. He is a big brown ball of fur that makes funny faces when you do silly and stupid thing and loves sticks. When I forget to feed him he has a way of telling me. I’m happy my parents let us get Cosmo.

9. My sister’s recovery- Early in her year and years she got into some trouble. I am proud and thankful she managed to get help and catch her self. I love my sister and am very thankful for her recovering, keep it up Rach.

10. Life- I am just thankful for living. One day at a time, living life to its fullest. Do the things you love, and make your life worth living. Having fun makes my life complete.

freshman year 09'

My high school Global Ed. Blog

Old friends, new friends
When I walked into school this year I immediately reconnected with some old friends in my classes like Kassidy, Audrey, Morgan, and Paige who I have five classes with. So far I have also made new friends. It didn’t happen right away but some new friends of mine are Katy, Taylor, Erin, Melinda, and Brittany.

SHS activities attended
I haven’t really gotten a chance to go to a lot of the varsity games because of swimming but I had a lot of fun at the one I went to. Night on the field was amazing Katy, Erin, Kyla, Allie, Catie, Josie and I did karaoke together. If have been to all of the swim meets but that is because I’m a swimmer for Stevenson.

Funniest, weirdest, scariest moments
Well I would have to say walking in between two people making out in the hall way was the weirdest thing that’s happened to me since I’ve been here.

Hardest, easiest class and assignments
I would say my hardest class is geometry because we have homework every day but it is easy. Global Ed history is my favorite because of Mrs. Bergeski.

Top five current events
Hilary Clinton made huge budget cuts for schools, Herta Muller won the noble literature prize, president Obama won the Noble peace prize, a tsunami in Samoa caused an earthquake and over 300 people died, and a kid got into a balloon off his roof called balloon boy.

Faces in the news
Some faces seen a lot in the news are Hilary Clinton, Sonia sotto mayor the new Supreme Court justice, Hamid Karzi the president of Afghanistan, also Susan rice and Ban Ki Moon.
Interesting new words
Well some interesting new words I’ve come across this year are loquacious and akimbo I don’t know why but they just sound weird.

Popular or memorable songs
Well I can’t really think of any other songs than the ones that get stuck in my head at swim practice and those songs are one time by Justin Beiber, whatcha say by Jason Derullo and party in the USA by Miley Cyrus.

Popular or memorable movies
I haven’t really seen any movies this year but I did go see Whip it and that was really good. I want to go see Where the Wild Things Are because it looks good

Rumors and gossip
Rumors and gossip are a waste of time.

Fads and trends
Some things that are really popular now are flannel shirts, skinny jeans, moccasins, UGG boots and zebra and cheetah prints

First cultural event
For my first cultural event I went to the Henry ford museum with my mom and sister. I picked creative display and made a Wenier mobile shaped book out of cardboard and I got an A.

Homecoming
I am so excited for homecoming my dress is white and black and I’m going with a big group of people. I am loving spirit week too, but this year’s homecoming shirts are a little ugly.

Advice for freshman
Well don’t walk slowly in the hall it’s really annoying and don’t walk on the opposite side of that hallway. Also the doors where you can pass from one hallway to another lock so if you’re going to be late and no one is around don’t take the doors.don't be late to global ed English.

What I’m looking forward to
I’m looking forward to getting to be able to call seniority on the freshman next year
